1961 年 5 月 25 日，美國總統 約翰 F. 甘迺迪 在美國國會發表演說，宣告美國要在 1960 年代結束前登陸月球：

... this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the Earth.

(...這個國家應投注在這目標，在這個 10 年結束前，將人送上月球，並安全的返回地球。)

大家所知的「We choose to go to the Moon」則是在 1962 年 9 月 12 日在德州休士頓的公開演講內容。

1969 年 7 月 20 日，阿波羅 11 號登陸艇 小鷹號 降落於月面。
